Support Literacy In Canada – Adopt a School with Indigo’s help
Reading, one of our favorite pass times in the Little Miss Kate household. I am so happy that A.C. loves to sit and read book after book, always bringing “another one” over to the couch to read. I am hoping as he grows he continues to develop a passion for reading on his own, as there is nothing better than relaxing with good book after a stressful day.
It is sad to know that in Canada over 40% of adults are functionally illiterate and struggle with day-to-day reading. Building the foundation of strong literacy skills starts right from the preschool years and continues all through out school. Library time was one of my favorite activities in elementary schools, I remember the fun of bringing home new books to read and great resources for school projects.
Indigo is helping to support literacy in elementary schools across Canada with its Adopt a School Program. As part of this program communities are encouraged to raise money and help get new books into the hands of children and raise awareness about literacy issues in Canada.
This year the Adopt a School program kicks off on September 16th and runs until October 6th. In 2011 this program provided over 50,000 books to school libraries across Canada.
Want to take part in this program? Visit the Adopt a school website to:
- Adopt a school – this is FREE to do, and for every 50 adopters 1 book is donated to that school
- Donate Online
- Buy an indigo e-gift card – Indigo will donate a book to your selected school for every e-gift card sold
This is the perfect time to pick up e-gift cards as presents, or even to do some of your own Christmas shopping later on the year as they will do double duty – you will get an e-gift card to shop at Indigo and a donation will be made to the school of your choice!

Disclosure – I was provided with a gift card in exchange for sharing this information. All opinions are strictly my own.

I had no idea the percent of Canadians struggling with reading was that high, wow. I'm going to check out this program today, I've bookmarked the page so when I'm done work I can look more on it, I think this is a great cause and I'd love to Adopt my kids' school!
This is great information, and I had no idea. I will definitely check out the program! Thanks for sharing
I got my sons school to sign up for this and I'm the rep for his school too. It's such a great fundraiser.
Great post! I'm not surprised at the numbers though. The program sounds great
WOW great idea! So nice to see Indigo helping schools! Thanks for sharing!
It is a great idea! Going to go see if there are any schools I know to support!
Love this idea. School library budgets are quite small (I know, I used to be a high school librarian). So, it is great to see Indigo helping them out!
This is such a great initiative. I just signed up to adopt a local school. Thanks for sharing this!
I adopted a school in London!
