Giving birth to your child is suppose to be an exciting day, a happy event for any family. The day that Monkey entered into this world is one that I will never forget and it was nothing like I expected it would be… Instead of being a happy joyful day it was one filled with tears, confusion and worry. I was supposed to have 2 more months to get ready for the arrival of my little man. He was supposed to have 2 more months to grow and develop inside me, yet here he was… in the NICU. A ventilator helping him breath, an incubator helping to keep him warm, an NG tube to feed him, and the most amazing doctors and nurses helping keep my baby alive.
You would never know now what a terrifying start Monkey had on life, but there are times when I flash back to those early days. Crying on the car ride home from the hospital as I left WITHOUT my baby. Searching online for answers to questions I was too afraid to ask the doctors: “Survival Rates of premature babies”. The cold terror I felt inside when Monkey’s monitors would start going off as he had another oxygen desaturation episode. After what at the time seemed like an eternity we brought Monkey home from the hospital, and he hasn’t looked back. My story has the ending we wish for all preemies.
Unfortunately life is not always like that, and not all preemies get to go home with their families… Baby Avery was born 3 months premature. Although she was cared for my some of the best doctors and nurses in Canada at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, she could not over come Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Disease. After 11 unforgettable days with her family by her side, she passed away.
In her memory Avery’s family has organized Avery’s Act of Kindness is working to raise $10,000 to go towards an incubator for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. These incubators are the first home for many preemies providing a stable environment that controls the heat, humidity, and oxygen for the baby. This equipment will help many more babies like Avery in the future.
