I am not a good flyer. I am not AFRAID of flying, I am just not GOOD at it. I know…. weird.
I make travel plans, book flights, plan activities, shop for new travel clothes, and get really excited about my trip until the day before I leave. And then I remember, I am not a good flyer – why do I do this to myself every time, what was I thinking when I decided to plan a trip that included flying, what is our cancellation insurance?!?
You see, I am very aware that air travel is very safe, and I am not worried about the plane crashing (although I would prefer it not to). But I don’t like the way flying makes me FEEL – the butterflies that you get in your stomach when the plane takes off, or dips, or turns (heaven forbid we have any turbulence). I hate roller coasters for the same reason, anything that gives you the sensation of falling. I even get butterflies in my stomach when driving in hilly areas. Ridiculous, but true.
I never let this stop me from flying and have been to Europe, Mexico, and many places in Canada. My coping strategies for flying normally involve not really thinking about going on a plane until it is too late, lots of calm breathing, talking to my companion about something completely unrelated, and watching the little flight tracker to see us getting closer to our destination. I never EVER take off my seat belt or walk while the plane in is the air. This time there is a small complication, he is 10 months old and my only traveling companion. So not only am I going to be dealing with my butterflies, but I will be trying to make sure Monkey is happy on our 2 hour plane ride as well.
I know that we will have a good time while we are away and as soon as we get pack I will start dreaming of my next vacation. But in the meantime I will try to battle back the butterflies so that Monkey and I can have a good flight .
Do you have a fear of flying?
