The countdown to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and Para-Olympics on, while the world only has to wait 2 more weeks to see the world’s best athletes compete in almost 100 events, it has been a much longer journey for the for those taking part in the competition. Years of practice, training, and sacrifice have finally paid off, allowing them to develop their skills to compete on the world stage. The Olympics are my favorite sporting event to watch – the excitement of seeing who will rise to the top under the enormous pressure of the games, and waiting to see what records will be broken. Although I am amazed by the talent and skills the competitors possess, what I enjoy even more is hearing the stories behind the athletes. What drives them to ski off a 90m jump or race down a track of ice at over 120km/hr? What compels them to get up daily at 4am to practice? Who was there to help and support them along the way? Stories like these:
Stories where we can find out more about the drive and passion that keeps them pushing themselves day after day to do better. The majority of the athletes competing are not in it for the money, so what does motivate them to pursue an excellence in sports that the average person has never even tried? (You won’t see me on a luge track any time soon!)
I love the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”, when applied to this case “It takes a county to support an Olympian”. From companies offering financial support so that athletes can afford to train at a world class level to individuals sending messages of support to the competitors, it all makes a difference along their journey to the Olympics.
Take a moment and send a message of encouragement to our Olympians – for all their hard work they deserve the recognition. A big thank you to the companies that helped support our athletes over the years, not only have you helped out the athletes individually, but you have made our communities stronger by giving our kids someone to look up to and promote an active lifestyle.
How are you showing your support for our Olympic Athletes this year?
