Can you feel that? It’s excitement in the air for the Pan Am Games! They are coming to the Greater Toronto Area, and Toronto and surrounding cities are buzzing with excitement! Many of my friends and family, have been joining in the festivities in their area. I have seen many pictures of fun events, and the torch passing by, on my social media channels.
Our family is also excited, we are joining in on the fun! When the torch relay came through our area, we went to the community celebration, and had a really great time! The kids had a blast and the memories we created that day will last a lifetime. One day we can look back and say we did that together! This is just one of the many exciting things that will be taking place during the Pan-Am Games.
For the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games, the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN) are the Official Host First Nation. They will be welcoming Canadians and visitors alike to enjoy the games since the GTA is the very heart of their traditional territory. They would like to teach the world about their culture, and their story, and this is the perfect time to do this with the world watching.
One of the ways they will be doing this is launching the #YouAreWelcome Food Truck on July 10th. The truck will be travelling all around the Toronto area to introduce everyone to their Aboriginal cuisine. Am I the only that thinks this sounds very cool, and tasty? Let’s face it, food is a great way to share your culture, and people like to eat tasty foods and I am no exception!
Each recipe on the truck is specially developed for this event, by Chef David Wolfman, and will introduce guests to the traditional and locally sourced ingredients that they would use in their traditional dishes. I will be checking out the #YouAreWelcome Food Truck myself and sharing all of the delicious details with you next week!
Another fun thing the MNCFN will be doing is distributing 25,000 $5 gift cards for the #YouAreWelcome Food Truck around the Toronto! These gift cards are designed by renowned First Nation artist Tracey Anthony. You can then use them at the #YouAreWelcome food truck to get some of the delicious Aboriginal cuisine. There is more than one gift card design too! So be sure to get them all! You will want to save this works of art.
Of course, the MNCFN will have their culture on display throughout the games including Aboriginal songs, ceremonies and food. Part of what we love about the Pan Am Games is being able to experience other people’s cultures and expose our kids to that. It’s great that they will get to see the First Nations rich traditions and culture, since they called this area home long before we did.
Since sports are very important to the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. Archery, canoeing and kayaking have all been part of their way of life for many generations, and they look forward to watching the athletes bring their skill and talent to these games which are rooted in their culture, and being able to share their culture with all of us.
Have you experienced any of the Pan Am Games celebrations, yet?
