There are few things that have as long lasting an impact on your life as your education. From teachers helping to shape and inspire you in your younger years to making the big decision of what you are going to do after high school it all has an impact in shaping your future. I was very fortunate that I had amazing family support and role models when I was trying to make my decision of what I wanted to do with my life, but not every child is as lucky. Figuring out what opportunities are available, what career options are out there and how to navigate the right path to reach your goals is a daunting task for any 16, 17 or 18 year old. That is where Pathways to Education comes in to support at risk youth find the right path to a brighter future.
I had the unique opportunity a couple of weeks ago to join Pathways to Education and Target Canada in the heart of Toronto’s Regent Park for an event to learn more about the Pathways programs, the work that they do in the community and talk first hand with the students who take part.
Pathways to Education was founded in 2001 and now operates in 13 low-income communities across Canada. Through their community based approach they provide academic, emotional and financial support to remove barriers to school completion through programs such as:
- After school tutoring
- Social and career mentoring
- 1-on-1 mentoring to help students succeed in school, at home and in the community

At this event it was announced that Target Canada will be providing Pathways to Education with $250,000 in funding for their Healthy Minds program where they provide healthy snacks during tutoring sessions and help educate teens on creating healthy meals and nutrition. Because Target Canada knows you can’t study while you are hungry!!! I loved talking to some of the Pathways to Education participants, although they were not always sure where they were headed a common theme was that they had a great support system and that they could do anything they put their mind to. With the help of Target Canada, Pathways to Education will continue to help open doors to a brighter future in communities where it is needed most.
