When Hubs and I renovated our kitchen just after we got married we bought new appliances to go with our shiny new counters and cupboards. This was one of our first major purchases as a newlywed couple and it did not come without a battle. Hubs wanted a fridge with a built in ice maker and water dispenser while I thought that they were useless features that would never get used. In the end he won, and it turns out I was dead wrong. I was quickly converted to the using the ice and water dispenser daily and think that everyone should have one in their refrigerator. When I heard about the GE Cafe French Door Refrigerator – a first in class refrigerator that dispenses HOT water, cold water and ice – I was skeptical at first, but after my past experience thought I should take the time to learn more before making a judgment.
I had the chance to see the GE Cafe in person at a recent preview event, and let me tell you this is one pretty fridge! The GE Cafe French Door Refrigerator allows you to pick from pre-programmed temperatures or set one of your own between 32-85oC for hot water dispensing. Make a perfect cup of cocoa with 65oC water, a delicious cup of soup with 85oC water and let your green tea steep at a perfect 77oC.
While I was impressed with the safety features that make sure only an adult is dispensing the hot water and the PreciseFILL for both hot and cold to make sure you never overfill your water bottles again I was a little underwhelmed the GE Cafe. Touted as the perfect fridge for making tea, the hot water temperature does not reach boiling, and is therefore not the idea temperature for making black tea. That said you can make a great cup of green tea without needing to guess at when your water is the right temperature.
While I won’t be running out the buy the GE Cafe Refrigerator right now, it is a beautiful fridge but is too big for my cabinets and I am not sure how often I would use the hot water feature as I usually drink black tea. Who knows maybe with time I will be converted just like I was with the ice dispenser that I now can’t live without. It is an interesting idea and may be a good option for those that drink a lot of green tea or like the convenience of having hot water at the push of a button. So what do you think, refrigerator that dispenses HOT water – Yea or Nay?
