We all know that taking care of our teeth is very important, but there are still many unknown dangers associated with poor oral health that extend beyond just cavities. And with Halloween just behind us and Christmas coming there are lots of sweet treats everywhere. Our oral health can have a great impact on our quality of life such as: Oral pain, missing teeth and infections as well as overall health issues.
Starting at a young age with our kids, we should be practicing excellent oral health care. Here are some great ways to beat the sweets this holiday season:
1. Teach good habits at a young age – Teach your children good oral health care habits early on. At 14 months we brush Baby Roos teeth and let her take a turn. Her brothers taught her how to say “Awwww” and she love trying to brush her teeth herself. The younger they learn to take care of their teeth, the easier it is to get them in a daily routine and help avoid future dental troubles. Introduce toothpaste with fluoride like Orajel™ Super Mario ™ Kids Fluoride Toothpaste once they are consistently spitting out the toothpaste and not swallowing it. Using a fun tooth brush, like Spinbrush™ Super Mario ™ battery brushes, doesn’t hurt either.
2. Look out for red flags – When you are doing your daily oral health care, keep an eye out for signs up trouble such as: Bleeding, red or swollen gums, and/or bad breath that won’t go away. These can be signs of gum disease that should be looked at by a dentist.
3. Keep your mouth as clean as a whistle – Make sure you’re brushing and flossing at least twice a day to achieve optimal oral health. Cleaning your teeth regularly will help prevent stains from tea, coffee and wine. If you know you are not going to be able to brush your teeth for several hours after eating then have a drink of water after your meal to wash away as much of the food and sugars from your teeth until you can get back to brushing again.
Remember that using all these healthy tips, and practicing good overall healthy lifestyle habits will make your best self, and help your oral health care as well as your overall health!
