The saying goes: Your first child is your “fine china”, your second child is “glass”, and your third child…. well your third child is “tupperware”! Now we never really treated Monkey like fine china, however I can totally see the difference between Baby #1, 2 and 3 when it comes to our bath time routine. Monkey always enjoyed his baths, and we used the time to relax and play in the water after a busy day. It was also a great way for Hubs to spend some quality time with Monkey, as it can be hard for dads to feel involved especially with breastfed newborns. Once Little Bear came along as soon as he was able to sit up by himself, he and Monkey would have baths together. It was one of the first times they would really “play” together, and even to this day it is one time that they seem to play nicely and not fight.
Then along came our “tupperware” baby. Baby Roo is your typical 3rd child. She goes with the fast pace of our daily lives, gets dragged around to all of her brothers’ activities and watches the world and soaks it all in. Bath time has become a special time for Baby Roo because she rarely gets one-on-one time. At least half the time when she gets washed, I am just pulling her into the shower with me for a quick scrub down. She is still too little to be in the tub with her brothers which means setting aside time for a bath just for her does not always happen. However I realize that there are many benefits of bath time including:
- Get Dads Involved – When you have a newborn, especially one who is breastfeeding Mom is usually the “go-to-girl” and Dads can be left wondering how to get involved. Bath time is a great time for Dads to take over and give moms a few minutes of peace while they spend some quality time together.
- Learning and teachable moments – As your child grows you can talk about simple concepts such as hot vs. cold water and seeing what toys float vs. which ones sink. Spend time talking about how soap helps get us clean and use the time to help teach your children new concepts.
- Technology Free Time – Ditch the cell phone and iPad. Take 20 minutes just to be with your baby enjoying each other’s company, be in the moment and present with your child.
