Birth is a funny thing, you can make all sorts of plans and preparations for it and it is still out of your control. My memory of A.C.’s birth is a little fuzzy, we were caught off guard by his early arrival and so many things changed so quickly as he was very eager to make his appearance. I was honored when I was approached by Carrie Duncan, photographer with Four Bees Photography about having birth photography done for Baby #2.
If you haven’t heard of birth photography before, as Carrie explains it, it is all about telling the story of the day your child was born. Capturing the moments and emotions as your labour progresses, and you get to meet your baby for the very first time. There won’t be any loud shutter clicks going off, or flashes in your face. Carrie is there to be as unobtrusive as possible, just capturing the moments as they happen, not directing or getting in the way.
Now I will admit, when I first talked to Hubby about having a birth photographer join us at the delivery of Baby #2 his first response was “Why?”. For me, the idea of birth photography appeals to me for a number of reasons:
- Birth is a natural process – it seems like birth has become just another medical procedure, but I believe it can be a natural and empowering experience for women. I think of birth photography can capture a woman’s inner strength in photos, and help show just how strong we really are
- We will have a beautiful record of the birth of Baby #2 – with A.C.’s birth we got one quick picture before he was rushed to the NICU. This time around Carrie will be there to take photos as we meet out baby for the first time, find out the sex and decide on a name
- Hubby will be holding my hand not the camera – we won’t need to worry about getting those “first shots” – weighing the baby, pictures of the tiny hands & toes. Hubby hates taking pictures and this way I don’t have to bug him to make sure we have those moments captured, he can be there supporting me.
- Someone will be there to document the details – Like snapping a picture of the clock to help put the timing of events into perspective, when in labour time gets a little “fuzzy”. This way I will have an accurate record of the birth of baby.
Four Bees Photography focuses on capturing all moments of parenthood – Bellies, Birth, Babies & Breastfeeding. My family had the pleasure of completing a photo shoot with Carrie last summer around A.C.’s first birthday, and recently completed a maternity photo shoot with her as well. You can see some of my favorite photos from both of these sessions above. I am looking forward to having Carrie attend the birth of our second child and having the experience documented in a beautifully natural way.
Disclosure: I am receiving a complimentary photo session in exchange for my review. All opinions are STRICTLY my own.
