I LOVE my sleep, I mean really love it to the point of day dreaming about the next time I get to sleep in. Heck I even have PJs that say I <3 Bed! I still remember back to the “glory days” of my teenage years sleeping in until noon… or whenever my parents dragged me out of bed. Fast forward to my university years, I still made it to every 8:30 am class, but I was getting up at 8:00 throwing on clothes and running all the way to class. On the days I didn’t need to be up, well there was no way you would see me before 10am. Now that Hubs and I are parents we have a carefully choreographed schedule that usually allows both of us 1 sleep in day a week, and by sleep in I mean 9am. Oh how I miss those days of blissful mornings lounging in bed.
These days the closest I get to that is living vicariously though my 18 year old sister. It will never cease to amaze me that she can sleep thought the morning chaos of my house with 2 small boys who will be yelling, crying, playing for hours before she will peek her head out the door when she sleeps over. That is IF she peeks her head out, more often then not I send Monkey in to jump on her to get her up. And heaven forbid you suggest doing something that requires her to be out the door before 8am, you will get a death stare for that.
But really I can’t blame her if I had the luxury of sleeping in I know I would take it! However as they say… all good things must come to an end… and school will be starting up again before she knows it. Here are my “expert” tips that I have developed from years of trying to maximize the amount of time I spend in bed in the morning:
- Plan ahead – do everything you can the night before: make lunches, take your shower, pack bags. Be as ready as possible to walk out the door the next day
- Alarm clock – make sure your alarm clock is far enough away from your bed that it takes a little bit of effort to hit snooze (just ONCE!)
- Breakfast needs to be fast and easy – the time I usually set aside for eating breakfast is normally lost to the snooze button… So breakfast needs to be grab and go. Things like muffins, fruit and YOP Drinkable yogurt are perfect to have on hand. You can still have a healthy breakfast while on the go to make it to class on time.
