A special guest post from a friend and fellow blogger Serena from Bewildered Bug
A little while ago I received a huge box of products, courtesy of Kate, from Healthy Shopper. I was amazed at the amount of products that were made available to me to try, because I truly was expecting only a few products, and even then, I assumed that I would only be able to use only one or two of them because of my many allergies and intolerances.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Healthy Shoppers Fall 2012 picks were ALL ITEMS I COULD ACTUALLY USE! I was doing a little dance when my husband walked in and asked me if I was crazy and why was this big box in the middle of our apartment?
Well he soon joined me when we unwrapped the carefully packed treasures – from San-J products, to Simply Natural salad dressings, to Natracare feminine products to Ecover cleaning products. These items were all perfect for anyone who wants to shop in a healthier manner for their family and for the environment.
The first little thrill was really the San-J products. As a gluten-free and dairy-free person, I find it hard to find allergy friendly foods at times. As someone who is of half-chinese descent, I cook with a lot of soya sauce – at least, I used to, until I went gluten-free. That was when I found out that most soya sauces on the market actually contain wheat as the first or second ingredient on the list of ingredients – often before soy itself! This is why I love San-J products so much – it makes it easy for me to cook. I no longer have to look for completely new recipes (and I hate following recipes when I cook), but could cook my old, familiar foods without worrying about being glutenated – which I have to tell you is NOT a good time.
My husband immediately ran away with the Teriyaki Sauce, and I tackled him for the soy sauce. Yes, that is how much we love San-J in this house. We had teriyaki tilapia that night – and it was really good, and, more importantly, gluten free and extremely healthy.
With the tilapia we had an awesome salad, and we both tried different flavours of the Simply Natural salad dressings. I had the Roasted Pepper Vinaigrette (because I wanted something a little different) and Hubby grabbed the Creamy Caesar Dressing. I loved the dressing – and even went for seconds (and I am not a salad fan). Hubby was not the biggest fan of the Caesar dressing, but he likes his processed cheese slices better than real cheese…#justsaying. I love that Simply Natural has some really intriguing and different flavours like Roasted Pepper Vinaigrette, Sesame Ginger Dressing, Goddess Dressing and Roasted Garlic Dressing. I also love that they have their “old faithfuls” like Balsamic Vinaigrette, Creamy Caesar, Honey Mustard, Raspberry, Italian and Ranch Dressing.
I’ve never used Ecover products, but with a little investigation into the product, I can tell you as soon as my laundry detergent is using it I will be switching over! It is natural, plant based and phosphate-free and cleans as effectively as the more chemical-laden detergents on the market! I would encourage you to definitely try this product, it’s good for you, your family, your clothing and the environment!
I’ve always had problems with feminine products – many of which make me itch and burn, and some of even which give me yeast infections (yeah…living with allergies is just NOT fun). The Hubby and I are also trying to conceive, so we have been trying to clean as many chemicals out of our lives as possible, we are taking crazy pre-natal vitamins, exercising more and …well…trying to make a baby…..For myself, especially, I am trying to make all my daily products as chemical-free as possible, especially products that touch my…um..intimate areas. The Natracare products have been advised by gynecologists to many, many women with sensitive skin because they are chlorine-free and contain no synthetic materials or chemical additives. They are also bio-degradable, so by using these, you are doing not only yourself a favour, but the environment we all live in as well.
I also got a copy of the book “Unjunk your Junk Food” – and at first I was doubtful, but when I browsed through the book, I saw that they had a typical “snack food” and then a healthier alternative. I mean things like the chocolate bars that I stash in my fridge, to potato chips that I hide from my husband, to cereals, to….. This book is amazing – and I am glad to see that some of what I eat is in the “unjunk” category, rather than the “junk” category. Okay, fine, some of what I snack on are in the junk category too!!!
All in all, the Fall 2012 picks by Healthy Shopper are an amazing group of products that are healthy, chemical-free and environmentally friendly. They are a great addition to any shopping list if you are looking to making your life a little bit more natural. If this sounds like something you’re striving for in your everyday life, hurry over to the Healthy Shopper website to pick up their 2012-2013 coupon book so you can start cleaning out your life, your body and your surroundings.
