Did you know that healthy feet are essential for overall good health? Many people tend to ignore the health of their feet until they are inflicted with pain or discomfort. It is only then that remember that our feet are made up of a complex structure of bones, ligaments and tendons that withstand repetitive pounding every days as we walk through life. Our feet are our base of support. They help us move, balance and remain in an upright position. If your biomechanics are off, a nasty chain reaction will occur causing pain and discomfort in the joints above (i.e. knees, hips, lower back etc.)
A few weeks ago, I attended the Spring preview event for Vionic Shoes (recently rebranded from Orthaheel), a brand that creates fashionable shoes with a standard orthotic to promote healthy foot biomechanics. The company was created 20 years ago when Phillip Vasyli, an Australian Podiatrist, and his brother marveled over the price of orthotics. At roughly $350 a pair, they are an expense that many families can not afford. Phillip and his brother sought to create an affordable orthotic that worked. They discovered that 80-85% of the population require the same characteristics to create an ideal footprint and that for those people a prefab orthotics where just as good as a custom one. A good orthotic is more about recreating the ideal footprint then it is about the individual foot. They discovered that by inserting these prefabricated orthotics into stylish shoes, more people were apt to wear them. This ground breaking design led to the birth of Vionic (Orthaheel).Having sold and owned many orthotics in the past, I was very curious to see the Vionic Canada line up. When most people think of orthotic shoes, they think of black, ugly, boxy shoes. This is the opposite of what Vionic Canada provides! Their spring line is full of the hottest colours, fashionable styles and a shoe type for everyone. These were the type of shoes you would see on celebrities feet or on run way models. They definitely don’t scream medical appliance! When I placed my foot in my first pair of Vionic shoes I was in heaven! That day I had worn the least supportive shoes in my closet. The moment my foot met the deep heel cup, metatarsal pad and strong arch support, my foot sighed with relief. The support was amazing, the comfort was cushioning yet firm, and the fit was perfect. The best thing about these shoes is that unlike other supportive shoes on the market, the shoes don’t mold to your feet overtime. Instead, they are designed to give us back our natural footprint, which is taken away from walking on flat, hard surfaces all day.
At the end of the night, Vionic Canada graciously gave us a free pair of Tide II Toe Post Sandal! In midnight black, these sandals are perfect for long walks on a beach, chasing children around a park or on a shopping spree with girlfriends. I love how they can be dressed up or down depending on your mood. The arch support was solid and evened out my posture and the deep heel cup prevented my constant need to pronate. After wearing orthotics all of my life, I highly recommend the support, comfort, and design that Vionic Canada shoes have to offer.
