Too short for basketball, too uncoordinated for baseball I was never very good a sports. There was a short stint in high school where I really enjoyed badminton, but other then that my sports participation has been pretty limited. But having kids has given me a second chance at a sports “career”. I might not have mad skills like the pros, but I am ready to try my best and answer “YES!” when my kids ask “Wanna Play?”.
Kids love to be active – running, walking, biking, swimming – so many possibilities! As as parents we know kids learn by example, if we are active, they are active. Plus there are so many other benefits to taking part in sports including build self confidence and learning to work as part of a team. So the next time your kid asks “Wanna Play?” say yes and go have some fun. I will admit my sports skills can use a little brushing up, Monkey points this out every time we try to play baseball and my throw ends up far from its intended spot. I just take moment to remind him that even grown ups don’t know how to do everything, and we need to practice to learn new skills too.
With 3 young kids, finding an activity that gets the whole family involved can be a little tricky. Little Bear wants to do everything Monkey does, even if his size and skill level just don’t match up. And we can’t leave baby Roo just sitting on the sidelines. We are trying to encourage the kids to try as many sports so they can see all the options that there are.
Going for walks to the park are always a hit, but I wanted a few more activities to do around home. Kicking around the ball in our backyard is something that we can all have fun with, and hey even Baby Roo can get involved. Check out this video to see just some of the ways we play and get active with the kids.
Soccer is something I can play with the kids – I have running shoes and can kick a ball. No high tech equipment needed, just the drive to have a little fun with the kids and get outdoors. And parents this is really something we need to be doing more. With 9 out of 10 not getting enough exercise each day it is time for parents to take responsibility and get out there with their kids. I might not have the kinds of skills Christine Sinclair does, but that does not matter to my kids. They just want to have FUN!
I want to see how you and your family are getting out and having fun. Share your photos on Twitter using the hashtag #WannaPlay and be a part of the change that gets our kids out there and active. Hey and while you are at it, get the kids to invite some friends over to play too, the more the merrier!
