I am sure you have seen it everywhere, it seems to spout up earlier and earlier every year… Back to School!!! As soon as August 1st hits it seems like Back to School displays pop up faster than dandelions covering my lawn. Pens, pencils, calculators, lunch boxes, backpacks in every design and colour! While back to school can be an exciting time (especially for parents!) it can also be an expensive time. This reality is a heavy burden on families that are already on a tight budget. So this year, if you can, remember to give back when going back to school.
My mother always showed me the importance of giving back to our community through time and donations. As a single mom for many years we didn’t always have a lot of extra money but if there was a charity function through school or an outreach program through our church she always made sure that we were involved. I too want to make sure I teach my boys about giving back to out community and helping those who may be in need of a little assistance. So I set out with the family in tow to Walmart to pick up school supplies that we were going to donate.
We purchased 4 lunch boxes and plenty of supplies to fill them up to help get some deserving kids off to the right start this school year. We even had some family members add in some additional goodies including water bottles, locker accessories and scissors – arts & crafts here we come!
We dropped all of our donations off at the Knights Table, a local organization that offers hot meals at a reduced cost, a food bank and services such as employment training & addiction support. And no trip to the Knights Table is complete without a donation to the food bank – it is so important for people to donate ALL year long, not just at Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas. By picking up a few extra items that were on sale at the grocery store we donated over 30 lbs of food too!
I know it is just something small, but hopefully having something like a new pack of markers, or a lunch bag just for them will make a child in my community smile and feel special. And even more importantly I have started to teach my boys the importance of giving back to those around us. So while you are doing your back to school shopping this year pick up an extra item or two to donate to those in need.
