Skating and Hot Chocolate – the perfect winter family outing
My kids started skating lessons this year. I have to admit, I like watching figure skating on TV. I grew up cheering on Elvis Stojko at the Olympics and World Championship competitions. But when it comes to me hitting the rink, I’m mostly in it for the hot chocolate.
Even though I’m not the best on the ice, I wanted my kids to be able to get out there and enjoy this favourite Canadian pastime. With skating parties at school, family skates at the local rink and winter birthday parties that invite them to lace up their skates just around the corner, I wanted them to be ready. I don’t expect them to make a career out of it – just have fun, be social. And it gives us another way to get out and enjoy the Canadian winter as a family.
There are so many new families this year experiencing a Canadian winter for the first time.
This year my kids are not the only ones hitting the ice for the first time. As I am sure you have heard Canada has been welcoming many new families from Syria. I’ve been involved in local volunteer effort to support a family from Syria to come to my hometown. I have wondered if our new friends had a chance to embrace Canadian winter yet?
I’m not the only one who’s wondered this. Second Cup Coffee Co. is hosting “Welcome to Canada” Skating and Hot Chocolate Party For New Canadians with Elvis Stojko. The event will have free skate rentals, free lessons and for those of us who are more interested in the chocolate part – there will be free Hot Chocolate. They’ll also be sharing their new, yummy looking Second Cup Coffee Co. Hot Chocolate Cookie. So come out have some wintertime fun and join Second Cup in welcoming new Canadians to Canada. Let’s show them all the fun to be had during Canadian winters! Here are the details you need to know to join in:

Where: Harbourfront Centre’s Natrel Rink – 235 Queens Quay West Toronto

Hot chocolate. In a cookie.
I should have started with that. If you try their cookie (at the party or at a Second Cup Location) you can do the #TasteItRateIt survey on Facebook for a chance to win a $50 Second Cup Coffee Co. That is a lot of cookies.
Hope to see you out at the rink soon. I’ll be the one waving from sidelines, sipping my hot chocolate.
