Waaaaay back when, before Monkey and Little Bear came along I had a different baby. One that knew just when I needed a cuddle and helped to keep me warm all winter long… my fur baby. It look years of convincing Hubs to get a cat, he grew up in a family where pets where outside only and he was less than thrilled about the thought of a furry friend living in our house. However I finally won him over and in spring of 2008 we brought home this tiny furry ball of fun.
Athena spent 2.5 blissful years being the centre of attention, and was less than thrilled when we brought Monkey home from the hospital. While she has learned to tolerate the boys, as they are not best of friends. I would love to say that from my perspective things have not changed over the years with Athena, but sadly as life has gotten busier it seems that she gets less and less attention. She is the first to let you know when she is displeased and feeling neglected. As February is the month of love I have tried to refocus and show our “first” baby some love and attention. Here are a few tips on how you can show your feline friends some love:
Shower your cat with attention– spend some time with your cat free of other major distractions. Cuddle up on the couch while watching a TV show or stop and take some time to brush their fur. Pamper your cat – no one likes a dirty bathroom, and it is no different for your cat. Athena was the first to let us know when she was dissatisfied with the “facilities”. We upgraded her little box to the Litter Robot and use Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal cat litter – now there is no smell, clean up is a breeze and we have both a happy mommy and happy cat
Have some playtime – when Athena was little we used to play games often, the laser pointer was one of her favorites. But as she got older, and I became busier we got out of the habit of play. Well we are breaking out the toys again to have some playtime and help Athena get a little bit of exercise, because let’s face it, sleeping for 20 hours a day is not the healthiest lifestyle!
Don’t forget the treats – every now and then we all deserve a little treat. While not part of our regular routine, once a week our so we will break out the kitty treats and Athena will come running as soon as she hears the bag to have a special treat.
Taking a few moments a week to reconnect with our pets is a great way to make the whole family happy. How do you spoil your pets?
