Taking care of our teeth may seem easy, but so many people struggle with it. Now is a great time to start thinking about how you can take better care of those pearly whites. Taking care of your teeth is more than just brushing twice a day. If don’t take care of your teeth and gums properly it could lead to cavities, gum disease, infections and oral pain. And no one likes a tooth ache! Remember it is even more important to take care of your teeth when you are pregnant as hormonal changes in your body increase your risk of gum disease. If you have had a lot of morning sickness stomach acid can also break down the enamel coating on your teeth and lead to problems. Check out these oral health tips to help you and your family save your mouth from unnecessary pain.
Keep Your Mouth Clean
Everyone knows that your mouth harbors good and bad bacteria. You want to keep your mouth clean and get the bad bacteria out as soon as possible. Flossing and brushing twice a day are a way of life when you want to keep your mouth clean. For all the sweet tooth’s out there, it can be hard to resist those decadent desserts. But foods high in sugar, even fruit and wine can stain your teeth. Try Arm & Hammer™ Truly Radiant™ Rejuvenating Paste to tackle tough stains left on your teeth from one too many sweet treats (hey it is hard to say no to pregnancy cravings!). You may also notice that your gums bleed more easily when you are pregnant (I know mine did), again this is due to hormonal changes and inflammation of your gums.
Start a Healthy Mouth Routine Early
One way to help your family have good oral health habits is to start early. Honestly, your children are never too little to start learning about a healthy mouth. By starting early, you can help them get into a good routine for the rest of their lives. It’s a fact that around 60-90% of children experience tooth decay, even with today’s medical advances. Start with a Fluoride-Free toothpaste until your child is consistently spitting, not swallowing the toothpaste. Then introduce a toothpaste with fluoride to help fight cavities from the get-go. My oldest loves his Spinbrush™ Super Mario ™ battery tooth brush so he can be like mom & dad using an electric toothbrush.
Keep an Eye Out for Suspicious Mouth Activity
Sometimes you can’t tell if there is something wrong in your mouth or the mouth of your children, however, sometimes you can. You can be on the lookout for signs of trouble in the mouth. Bleeding, swollen gums, and bad breath can all be signs of gum disease. If you suspect any trouble in the mouth, get it looked at by a dentist. Professional cleanings are safe when you are pregnant, you will just skip the x-rays and will likely put off any dental work (fillings etc) unless it is urgent until after the first trimester.
Take time this month to make sure your mouth and the mouth of your kids get extra special TLC. Taking care of the mouth, teeth, and gums is a big job, but with persistence it will become a very positive routine for you and your family.
P.S. Don’t forget to smile to show off all of your hard work!
