Breastfeeding moms have an important job to do. Not only to they need to make sure that they are getting the nutrition they need, they are also providing their baby with all the nutrients that are required for them to grow and develop. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated while breastfeeding:
1 – When baby drinks, you drink – Make it a habit, every time you nurse grab a glass of water (even if it is a small one) to replace the fluids you are giving to you baby. I could never remember when the last time I had a drink, so I simplified things and just make sure that with every nursing session I had a drink for myself as well
2 – Vary it up – Staying hydrated doesn’t mean that plain water is your only option. Vary up your beverages during the day by including tea or fruit infused water. Personally I stayed away from pop and juices because if I am going to drink something I would rather it not have a ton of sugar in it.
3 – Make it simple – With so many other things to think about with a newborn at home, something as simple as grabbing a cold glass of water or making tea can be a hassle. 4 – Plan ahead – Are there a few spots in your house where you spend most of your time with your baby? Maybe your bedroom, rocking chair or patio. Fill up a couple of re-useable water bottles and plant them around your house. Don’t forget to take a water bottle with you when you head out of the house as well, that way no matter where you are you will have drink at hand.5 – Eat foods high in fluid – fluids don’t just come from the beverages you choose, but also your food as well. Having a nutritious soup, like Pea Soup or Cantonese Chicken Noodle Soup, is a great way to sneak in some extra hydration. Enjoy a snack of grapes or watermelon to satisfy your snack craving and boost your fluid intake.
So how much water do breastfeeding moms need? Most resources say to drink to quench thirst. However, that means that moms need to make sure they listening to their bodies and not ignoring the signs of being thirsty. A good general rule is to have at least 8 cups of water a day, or more if it is hot and humid where you will loose water via sweat. Breastfeeding moms need to remember that they need to take care of themselves in order to be able to take care of their baby. Staying hydrated is an important part of that.
