When you have a career there is 1 job where you have ALL the titles including:
- HR manager
- Marketing coordinator
- Administrative assistant
And many more. So what job am I talking about? This time I am not talking about being a mom, rather a small business owner. When you run a small business you are “the man” (or woman!). There is no HR department to do the hiring, or an accountant to file quarterly taxes. All of a sudden a passion for your business had grown into a something much larger then you ever imagined. I know first hand how tricky it can be. Hubs owns his own carpenter business. He loves to build and started working with his Dad as a carpenter when he was a teenager. What he didn’t realize at the time was all of the other “stuff” that goes into owning your own business.
Small business owners need to be adaptable and always willing to learn. From doing research on how to file WSIB payments to figuring out how to budget for sick days and vacation days, because when you own your own business if your don’t work you don’t get paid. The demands on small business owners can be great, and when I watched this video from BMO I could instantly relate.
Life is so busy for everyone, it can be hard to ask for help. And it feels like there are things that only you can do. So sometimes other people need to stop in and say “stop” even if it is for just 1 day. That is exactly what Bank of Montreal did for Arash, a Deli owner in Toronto.
By having BMO branch managers step out of the office and head behind the counter at the deli they, with the help of Arash’s employee’s, where able to give him a much needed day off. If you are a mom, you know just how wonderful a single day off can be! I love seeing stories like this because it is these small businesses that make differences in the lives of people every day. Often they are overlooked for the long hours they put in and many hats they must wear. Thanks to BMO for letting Arash know that he is appreciated. The next time you are talking to a small business owner let them know just how much you appreciate what they do as well!
