This spring I was in Ottawa for a conference, this time it was just Baby Roo and I on a girls road trip. Even though we were not staying in downtown Ottawa I made sure to make a trip, well 2 actually, to the Byward Market. A lovely area of downtown Ottawa that offers amazing shops, restaurants and atmosphere. Walking distance from Parliament Hill spend an afternoon browsing the market and then stop to pick up dinner, and a little dessert too. While you are at the market make sure you keep your eyes open for these 5 hidden gems in Ottawa’s Byward Market and enjoy some of the best food and shopping that Ottawa has to offer.
5 Hidden Gems in Ottawa’s Byward Market
Navarra – 93 Murray Street – You won’t dine and dash at Navarra. This Spanish tapas inspired menu offers something for everyone. Headed by Chef Rene Rodriguez, the winner of 2014 Top chef Canada your taste buds are in for a treat. You can choose items individually or order from a tasting menu complete with wine pairings.
Khao Thai – 103 Murray Street – In the mood for Thai? Khao Thai offers a fine dining experience that will leave your mouth watering. It is worth the walk to the middle of the market to enjoy the tasty and reasonably prices offerings from Khao Thai. The Pad Thai was delicious and makes me want to do back to Ottawa just to have dinner here. They also have an extensive vegetarian menu if that is a consideration for when you a picking a place to eat.
The Cupcake Lounge – 6 Byward market Square – Now this is one place I knew I needed to stop in on this trip. When I was in Ottawa 2 years ago my mom brought be back a cupcake from here while I was at a conference and it was amazing. I knew I needed to see it first hand, and it was so good that I went twice during my 4 day trip!!! With a cupcake menu that changes daily and includes Cookie Dough, Mango Passionfruit, chocolate peanut butter and so many more I wish I could go every day of the week.
BeaverTails – 69 George Street – While its location may not be hidden the BeaverTail cabin can be overlooked as just a “stand”. Don’t be fooled, this cabin offers a variety of sweet treats to take with you on your adventures of Ottawa. Grab a classic Cinnamon and Sugar BeaverTail or go all out with a Banana Chocolate Beaver Tail, the choice it up to you!
Milk – 45 William Street – Although there are many unique shops nestled in the Byward Market, Milk was a treat to go in an browse. I was browsing the market with a Kristen, a kitty crazy friend, so as soon as we saw a Kitty shirt in the display we had to go in. We were not disappointed. Milk is filled with unique yet stylish clothing as accessories. While I may not be able to afford to by my whole wardrobe there, there were definitely a few pieces I would like to see in my closet and Kristen scored a shirt that could not be more perfect for her – cats sitting on donuts 🙂
The Byward Market is also home to many other pubs and restaurants, and if it is patio season then this is one place where you will want to be! Next time you are in Ottawa make time to stop by the Byward Market and enjoy the sights, sounds and delicious tastes that the area has to offer. I have only highlighted 5 Hidden Gems in Ottawa’s Byward Market but there are so many more to discover!
