As winter rolled in so did the runny noses and coughs, isn’t wintertime just wonderful. I mean really why wouldn’t we embrace the whiny “my throat hurts”,”Mom I need another tissue”, and my all time favorite “Remember to cover your coughs”. Oh joys of having 3 young kids. While getting a cold is not the end of the world it is something I could do without especially with Baby Roo being so little. It is one thing for Hubs or I to be sick, but there is so little you can do to help a baby feel better when they have a cold. And keeping the boys (and their germy hands) away from her is nearly impossible. That said we are taking steps to help prevent the spread of viruses in our household. Here are 5 ways to prevent colds:
– Wash your hands – Viruses can be transmitted via contact with contaminated surfaces such as door knobs, railings, even your nose! Make sure you are washing your hands frequently with soap, especially before eating. Go over what good hand washing routine looks like with you kids to remind them that wetting your hands is not washing.
– Rest and Exercise – Getting enough sleep is essential for optimal immune system function. Just like how you run slower when you are tired, the same goes for your immune system. Moderate exercise a few times a week has also been shown to improve immune function, another great reason to get active with the kids.
– Clean the air – While cleaning your hands and surfaces you touch is important to stop the transmission of viruses, what about the air? Coughing, sneezing and even just breathing can aerosolize virus particles and spread them around your home. The Fellowes AeraMax Air Purifier can help you clean the air you breathe to remove particles and microbes as small as 0.3 microns. Breathe easier knowing that you can combat cold viruses by removing them from the air.
– Find some time to de-stress – Increase stress levels can suppress your immune response making it harder to fight of cold viruses. I know how busy life is with kids, but try to manage your stress levels by planning head and remembering it is OK to say “No”.
– Eat, drink and be merry – Make sure you are staying hydrated (8 glasses of water a day please) and eating a well balanced diet to help keep your body in top shape to fight off any viruses that do make it into your system. So eat lots of fruits, vegetables, healthy grains and proteins to help boost your immune system.
