Many people have asked us why we cloth diaper Monkey, so I thought I would share why we decided to go with cloth over disposables.
When I started to look into cloth diapering it was mostly for environment reasons. I hated the thought that the diapers we were going to use on Monkey would still be around when my Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandchildren are born.
Here are some facts on disposable diapers
- The average baby will require between 5000-7000 diaper changes in the first two years of life
- In Canada 4,000,000 diapers are thrown out EACH DAY
- It can take over 500 years for a disposable diaper to break down
- And I am not crazy about the idea of my son wearing a diaper made with countless chemicals (dioxins and phthalates – no thank you!), plastics, glues and adhesives.
Monkey was in disposables while he was in the NICU and we had to use diaper creams to keep rashes at bay. Since switching to cloth diapers from the time he came home he has never had another rash and we have never used any creams. And the “ick” factor is not really a factor – you are dealing with poop either way but with cloth the poop actually gets treated in our waste management system and does not end up in a land fill.
Money savings can be another reason while people choose cloth diapers, although it was not the main reason for us it is nice to know that we will be saving money in the long run. The upfront costs are higher, but I will not NEED to buy another diaper for Monkey (I just WANT to buy them). Plus if you use the diapers on a second child your savings go WAY up.
And of course lastly – cloth diapers are just so much cuter then disposables, you can find all sorts of prints and one of a kind diapers – who wouldn’t want them on their little one’s behind.
Here are some of the latest Cloth Diapers, all made in Canada – I have been lusting over

And if they make such cute diapers for boys, you can imagine how cute the girls diapers are…
I think my next purchase is going to be a Canada Day diaper for Monkey (if I can find one!) – because every little boy needs a Canada day cloth diaper
If you are on the fence about cloth diapering TRY IT, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
