If you have not been to the Ontario Science Centre lately then you are missing out on an experience of bodily proportions!!! There are 2 new exhibits open that let you explore the ins and outs of the human body: The AstraZeneca Human Edge and Sesame Street Presents: The Body. The AstraZeneca Human Edge is a new permanent exhibit on level 6 of the Ontario Science Centre, focused on exploring the wonders and possibilities of the human body. Divided up into 5 main themes – In the beginning, mind and body limits, personal limits, pushing pas the limits and outer limits – the Human Edge takes you through the amazing feats of the Human body from conception to well into our later years. While the Human Edge is child friendly, I appreciated the detail and depth of the exhibit as an adult. This is an area I could see myself exploring with or without the kids.
There were 2 areas of the Human Edge that I enjoyed the most. The first being the section dedicated to preemies, it was interesting to be able to talk to Monkey about the preemie doll they had on display and let him know that he was that small when he was born and needed some of the same help and equipment as the doll. It will never cease to amaze me how much the tiniest humans can overcome.
The second area that captivated both me and the boys was the freediving exhibit, where you can learn what it is like to be a freediver and in real-time go through a record breaking 88 meter dive. I cannot even fathom holding my breath for over 2 minutes!!!
There are many other great areas to explore as part of the AstraZeneca Human Edge including interactive rock climbing displays, extreme sorts and sports injuries, and many more hands on exhibits. The only section that I didn’t find as “edgy” as the rest, but no less important to be reminded of, was the area dedicated to healthy eating and diabetes. I really enjoyed the Human Edge and am looking forward to getting to explore even more of the exhibit the next time I visit the Ontario Science Centre.
Geared towards preschoolers the Sesame Street Presents: The Body is a bright and interactive exhibit that covers everything from fingers and toes to all the squishy insides you can’t see. Breaking the body systems down into smaller teachable units each display of the exhibit focuses on educating kids about the form and function of each organ. From singing a song about the pancreas with The Count’s Organ Organ, to learning about our body’s “garbage disposal system” with Oscar, Monkey loved going from display to display to see what we would be learning about next.
Divided up into 3 main categories – Your Insides, Your Outsides, and Staying Healthy – Sesame Street Presents: The Body is a well rounded and easy to understand view of how the human body works. Baby Bear’s Mini Mart was a huge hit with children shopping for lots of healthy foods and learning what foods should be “sometimes” foods. The importance of personal hygiene was built into a fun game with Ernie’s Rub-a-Dub Tub. Both Monkey and Little Bear had a fun time exploring this special exhibit. If you are thinking about taking your kids to see Sesame Street Presents: The Body don’t wait too long, this limited time exhibit is only here until May 5th!
