You know you’re a parent when going to the grocery store by yourself is like an all-inclusive vacation. Taking my 3 little ones can be like trying to herd cats while searching for elusive groceries that always seem to be moving places in the store. It is no small task to come up with home cooked meals for my family of 5 that everyone will enjoy, or at least try. We were getting stuck in a culinary rut of making the same meals again and again. It is hard enough to get dinner on the table by 6 o’clock at night, I don’t have time to take a chance of something that may or may not turn own and to hunt down the ingredients for a new recipe in the store. I was excited for the chance to try Goodfood a ready to cook meal delivery service that delivers food recipes with farm fresh ingredients right to your front door weekly.
That’s right fresh ingredients to make delicious recipes already portioned out, delivered right to your front door. Sound too good to be true? Well it’s not with Culiniste. When signing up for the service you can decide how many meals per week you would like (between 2-4 different recipes) and how many portions you need for your family (2 to 4 servings). You can also customize what types of recipes you would like including the variety of meat options that you eat in your house. Don’t like seafood? That’s okay, let them know and you will see never shrimp it in any of your recipes. Don’t know how to cook fish but want to give it a try then keep the fish option and Goodfood will send you a delicious dummy proof recipe and ingredients to try. Trying new recipes and new foods does not get any easier than this. Take a scroll though the Goodfood Facebook page or Instagram to see a sampling of the tasty recipes that are included in their boxes weekly.
Getting started with Goodfood is easy, the service is available for delivery in Ontario and Quebec. Once you have placed your order through their website it is shipped out in a insulated box to arrive at your house on Tuesday. Every recipe is individually packaged so that you can easily unpack ingredients into your own fridge. The shipment has ice packs included and everything stays cool and fresh until it reaches your door. You do not have to be home for delivery they can leave it at your house so that it is there when you arrive that evening. Take a look at this unboxing video so you know that to expect:
Each recipe comes with colorful instruction sheet that tells you step by step what you need to do to prepare your recipe. There is a little bit of prep work involved with washing and chopping the vegetables for the recipe these are not instant dinners but rather delicious meals prepared with fresh ingredients. I found it took between 30 to 45 minutes to prep and cook the dinner depending on the recipe. And when they say fresh they mean FRESH. The vegetables were perfectly ripe (and nothing was squashed or damaged during transport, don’t worry) and the herbs we so flavourful and fragrant. Honestly, I had never really cooked with fresh herbs before, except the odd time using basil, and what a difference it makes to the flavour of your dishes.
The menu changes each week for the Goodfood box and I was really impressed with the variety of meals. From salmon burgers and steak to homemade chicken fingers and pasta we were provided with family pleasing recipes all week long. One of my favorite things about getting this box each week was being able to try out new ingredients and cook new things. I had never cooked salmon before getting it in our box in the first week. Honestly I was nervous and didn’t know if the kids would even try it. Much to my delight it was easy to cook and the kids loved it I have even picked up some at the grocery store to cook on a night where we didn’t have a Goodfood recipe. Now that is a new found confidence in cooking that I have not had in a very long time.
Keeping in mind we were actually feeding a family of 5 on a box for 4 there were a couple of meals that I added an extra side dish in. But overall I found the portion sizes reasonable, and closer to what we should be eating for a regular meal rather over eating as it is so easy to do. So how do you know what recipes are coming your way with Goodfood? You will get a notification the week before your delivery showing you the options for the recipes based on the preferences you outlined in your profile. You are able to choose which recipes you would like for the following week. You can pause or stop your subscription to Goodfood at any time. I found the customer service helpful and responsive when I reached out with a question.
As much as I enjoyed the service for my family, I think Goodfood would also be a great housewarming gift idea for the couple who are moving in together for the first time or the University student who is just learning how to cook and needs a helping hand along the way. (Or for the mom of 3 who feels like she’s at the zoo when she goes to the grocery store with her kids. Yep this would make a great gift for her too.) If the sound of fresh ingredients delivered right to your door to make tasty recipes sounds like a dream come true, then head on over to Culiniste to learn more about this sanity saving service.
