My daughter has allergies. When she first started demonstrating symptoms I thought she had a cold but after about a week I started to get concerned as the symptoms were not going away. Then I realized – it’s not a cold she just has allergies.
How To Tell If It Is Allergies Or A Cold
Symptoms allergies and cold share:
Symptoms of allergies:
- Watery, itchy eyes
- Itchy throat
- Symptoms last a long time
Not every child will display all of these symptoms some will have a mixture. My daughter had a runny nose and she also had discharge coming from her eyes. It was the length the symptoms lasted that really tipped me off that it was allergies, instead of a cold. Also the seasonality of when symptoms show up can also be an indicator of allergies.
How To Relieve Symptoms of Allergies.
My daughter’s allergies are not that bad. On a scale of minor to extreme I would put her as an annoying and a bit gross. She was happy and playing but her nose was always running so she was always having to stop and wipe. All the wiping can cause irritation around your little ones nose as well.
I do not like to medicate her unless it is necessary. Since her allergies were mostly an annoyance not a health risk I wanted to try alternative methods. Here is what worked for us
How to relieve allergy symptoms without medication:
Minimized exposure to allergens. My daughter has seasonal allergies so this one was a bit tough. We did keep the windows closed and changed the furnace air filter to try to minimize her allergies. Friends have also recommended an air purifier to help reduced the allergens floating around our home
Drank lots of water. By trying my best to keep her healthy otherwise, (staying well hydrated for example) she did not have to deal with compounding symptoms. I did not want her to get sick on top of not feeling 100%.
Explained what allergies are. By normalizing her allergy symptoms and letting her know that she is not sick she was able to relax a bit and have more fun (important at any age but especially for a three-nager). We also sang songs about allergies every time we had to stop to wipe her face. Our favourite is the allergy song by The Wiggles.
Used ‘special allergy’ tissues. ‘Special allergy’ tissues work similarly to ‘magic band-aids’. The tissues were really Kandoo Boogie Wipes. She loved them because they smelled ‘delicious’ (like grapes) and I liked them because they cleaned up much better than regular tissues. She also has sensitive skin and the Boogie Wipes were nice and gentle.
Cleaned out her nose. When at home we also use Boogie Mist to clean out her nose. The first few times were a bit tricky as she didn’t really want me sticking something up her nose, but afterwards she was able to breathe much better.
