It has been an amazing summer for us here in Southern Ontario but all good things must come to an end. As much as I love the warm weather, I am excited about fall! With the leaves changing colour, the local fall fairs in full swing and all of the decor popping up, how can you not be excited…and can I mention pumpkin spice? But amongst this seasonal bliss the dreaded cold and flu season begins to emerge. With Bee and WeeBee going to daycare I feel like at least one person in our family of 4 is always sick with some a sniffle, cough, ache or pain. While some colds and flu’s seem to pass without a lot of grief, others can knock us off our feet for several days, proving how taxing they can be on our bodies. With that said, here are a few suggested tips that I found to be helpful during this years cold and flu season.
Disinfect Commonly Touched Surfaces – Germs can last for hours or days on hard surfaces and can be passed easily from one surface to another once contaminated. It is therefor important to keep high traffic areas disinfected. Some surfaces are cleaned often like counter tops and work desks, but others like door knobs, light switches, telephones, keyboards and coffee pots are easily overlooked. During cold and flu season you many want to consider cleaning these areas more often.
Wash your Hands – A commonly known flu fighter, keep your hands clean! Start early and teach your children how to wash and dry their hands properly. Wash thoroughly with disinfecting soap and water, do this often throughout the day. Be sure to carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you for added protection on occasions when you can’t get to a sink. Also, avoid touching your face, nose and eyes. Touching these areas make it very easy for cold and flu pathogens to enter the body.
Take your vitamins – Taking a daily vitamin is important to maintain good health all year round. Try Vitafusion Men’s or Women’s Complete Multivitamin. There are different formula’s for both men and women. Vitafusion Men’s contain B vitamins to help convert food to energy while Vitafusion Women’s contain calcium and vitamin D. For the littles in your life try L’il Critters Despicable Me Minion Made or Lil Critters Barbie. Your kids will love the great taste from naturally sourced flavours, not to mention the fun shaped gummies! You will love that they are filled with essential nutrients that help maintain good health.
Stay hydrated – Not just for the hot summer months, drinking plenty of water is essential. Staying hydrated can lessen the effects of some bad colds and help keep you feeling great. Try to drink a least 2L of water per day. Also, if you are using a reusable water bottle be sure to wash it thoroughly with soap and water regularly. Germs can make their way into your water bottle and live there, ew!
Rest is Best, but Exercise Works too – if you feel a cold coming, try to rest. I know from personal experience that this can be hard when you have a family to take care of or a demanding job, but do try and take it easy so your body can work on fighting the cold or worse, flu. This may mean skipping a day at the gym or asking for help. On the other hand, if you are feeling well be sure to get lots of fresh air, cold and flu season means we are all cooped up inside which can have negative effects on your body.
You may end up with at least one cold this season (and if you do check out these 5 Tips to Get You Back on Your Feet When You Have a Cold) , but if these tips help you avoid the majority of them then you’re doing great! So remember to take your vitamins, get regular exercise, manage your stress and ask for help when needed and drink, drink, drink that water to maintain a healthy immune system this season.
